Damage Survey

The true extent and repair cost of the damage, documented independently — a report you can put in front of your insurer.

  • The cause and the timing of the damage are documented separately
  • Earlier repairs distinguished by hammer and moisture readings
  • ECU records read after an impact or grounding
  • Can be submitted as a second opinion against a loss adjuster
  • Repair items listed with a cost range

A damage survey independently documents the extent, the cause and the repair cost of damage following an impact, grounding, fire or flooding. It is used in insurance claims and legal disputes. Field work takes 1-2 working days.

When a damage survey is needed

Collision, grounding, storm, fire, lightning or flooding — each leaves two questions: exactly how much damage, and what will repair cost? A damage survey answers both in measurable terms, in a form ready for the insurer, the owner or legal proceedings.

How the inspection runs

The incident is documented first — circumstances, photographs, the policy’s scope — because establishing the cause correctly is the foundation of the claim. The visible damage is then mapped and the surrounding structure examined: percussion testing for laminate voids, moisture readings for water ingress, dye penetrant for suspect cracks. Machinery, steering and fuel systems are checked for transmitted damage, and after water ingress every electrical circuit is tested — salt-soaked wiring keeps producing faults for weeks, and the report records those forward risks too. Where the vessel’s condition allows, a sea trial verifies the drivetrain under load.

What sets this inspection apart

A damage survey usually turns on a single question: did this damage happen in this incident, or was it already there?

  • An old repair can be hidden; a reading cannot. A patch under paint may be invisible; the hammer changes note over it and the moisture meter reads the difference in the laminate.
  • If the engine took the impact, it has a record. A grounding or a sudden stop leaves overspeed, overheat and fault entries in the ECU. That record carries both the date and the severity.
  • The report is not written for one side. What the findings show is what goes in; it can equally be used as a second opinion against a loss adjuster’s report.
Thermal scan across a damaged area
A repaired area heats differently from its surroundings; thermal imaging draws the boundary of a past repair.

The report

Every damage item is photographed and listed with its repair method and a cost range covering parts and labour, separating what can be salvaged from what must be replaced. The document is structured for direct use in the claim and in negotiating the repair with the yard.

Duration and fee

Field work takes 1-2 working days, depending on the extent of the damage.

Distance to the vessel and her state (ashore / afloat / sunk) affect the fee.

Fees vary with the length of the boat, where she lies and the season. For a firm price call us — tell us about the boat and we will give you the number on the phone.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions

Will my insurer accept the report?

Yes. The report documents the extent, cause and itemised repair costs with photographs, in a format used directly in claims. An independent surveyor's report also strengthens your position in any valuation dispute with the underwriter.

How soon after the incident should the survey happen?

As soon as possible. Secondary damage - waterlogged laminate progressing, corrosion spreading through electrics - grows the bill with every week, and proving the cause becomes harder. Photograph everything before touching the vessel.

The visible damage looks minor. Do I still need a survey?

Impact energy travels through the structure, and the real damage often appears far from the point of contact. A light bow touch can leave cracks at the keel joint or in internal stiffeners. The inspection therefore covers the surrounding structure, not just the visible scar.
