What is checked in the bilge system and tanks?
Bilge pumps and float switches are run in both manual and automatic, and the alarm is tested separately. Any water standing in the bilge is checked for salt content. In the tanks, seams, unions and vent lines are followed for leaks and odour.
Why it works this way
Whether the water in the bilge is salt or fresh tells you at once whether the problem is in the hull or in the cooling circuit — that single question halves the search area. It is also why bilge water is tasted or tested rather than simply pumped out.
