What is looked at specifically on a sandwich-construction boat?
The risk in sandwich construction is not on the surface but in the core between the two laminates: water entering through a single screw hole rots the foam or balsa and gives no sign outside. Systematic hammer testing finds the void through sound; a moisture meter finds the wetness through a reading.
Why it works this way
Water almost always enters around a load-bearing deck fitting, so the area surrounding every winch, cleat and stanchion base is scanned separately. Caught early, a soft spot is a local repair; left alone it becomes a deck rebuild.
