Can I buy a boat without a survey — how risky is it?
You can, but then you learn the boat’s real condition from the seller’s account. The scale of the risk is easy to see: a survey costs in the order of one per cent of the boat’s price, while a single item missed — osmosis repair, engine rebuild, keel joint — can reach a significant share of it.
Why it works this way
A survey is not an expense so much as a way of pricing that risk. In many cases the report pays for itself in the negotiation that follows.
