How is rot and internal damage found in a wooden boat survey?

Rot in timber advances from the inside out, so the surface can look sound while the fibre beneath has already softened. Inspection relies on sound and resistance: a sounding hammer finds voids through the change in note, and a probe finds softening through the change in resistance. Moisture readings and a borescope cover what cannot be reached without dismantling.

Why it works this way

This is why a standard GRP checklist falls short on a wooden hull. The failure mode is different, so the method has to be different — but the scope of the survey does not shrink.
