How much do engine hours matter when buying?
Hours alone are misleading: a lightly used marine engine more often shows corrosion, dried gaskets and fuel system sediment. What decides is the distribution of those hours across rev bands and the maintenance history.
Why it works this way
Both are read from the engine control unit. The dash panel can be changed; the ECU record stays — which is why it outweighs the hour meter.
