What problems come up most often when buying a used boat?

In order: a wet core taking water in through deck fittings, undisclosed repair history (which thickness readings reveal), safety equipment past its service date, an MMSI still registered to the previous owner, and tired standing rigging. None of these appear in an advertisement; all of them appear in a survey.

Why it works this way

What these five share is that they arise from time rather than neglect, which is why they turn up on well-kept boats too. A wet core leaves no mark on the surface, an old repair stays under paint and an MMSI registration cannot be seen at all. The question in a used purchase is therefore not how clean the boat looks but which measurements were taken.
