What is checked in a rig and sail survey?
Terminals are cleaned and dye-penetrant tested one by one, shroud tensions are measured and recorded, and the mast and spreaders are examined from top to bottom. Furling gear and sails are operated rather than inspected statically.
Why it works this way
A stainless terminal does not fail all at once: a hairline crack starts, grows under load and then lets go — and that crack is invisible, the surface stays bright. Since a rig is only as strong as its weakest link, one cracked terminal costs the mast.
